International Slayer Day

Today is international Slayer day! There's even a website dedicated to it: http://www.nationaldayofslayer.org/ (WARNING, site has Raining Blood on autoplay in a miniplayer near the top rather loudly).

As a kid, I had always heard the name Slayer talked about with hushed voices, as if it were totally taboo and terrible. I grew up in a rather straight-laced and semi-conservative community, so it's not that surprising in retrospect. Slayer was one of the first bands I started listening to when I was discovering metal when I was an early teen,  (They were probably the 6th Metal band that I discovered), and I instantly fell in love with them.

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman recently passed away from liver disease and was with the band from the start and was actively touring up until his hospitalization and subsequent death. The remaining members of the band plan to throw a party in his memory.

So in honor of International Slayer Day, here's my favorite song from Slayer, "South Of Heaven".
